What to expect:
Day 1: Arrival. Check-in and get settled.
We will start our experience with a lovely 3-course welcome dinner prepared by a local, private chef in the villa's gardens. Dinner will be an excellent time to introduce ourselves, make new friends, and talk about the week to come.
Day 2: Disconnect to Reconnect
We begin the day with a sunrise gentle flow yoga class and a singing bowl meditation. Each day we will have a different flow and intention to build upon our theme to reconnect. The intention of the first day is to disconnect, to clear the mental slate. Once we have nourished our minds with meditation and our bodies with a healthy, hearty breakfast, we will suit up and make our way to a private cenote. Here you will participate in a Mayan ceremony guided by a woman Shaman (Abuela) to help you disconnect from and let go of the things holding you back in life. Cenotes are sacred places for the Maya people. This ceremony is sure to stay with you long past the retreat. We will swim, play, and enjoy a picnic lunch at the cenote before returning to the villa for some free time. At sunset, we will meet in the chef’s kitchen for a cooking class; think traditional Mexican food meets healthy.
Attire for the day: comfortable fitness wear for yoga, bathing suit, anything white and flowy for the ceremony, a dry set of clothing to return in. Sturdy water shoes for cenote. You will receive an apron for our cooking class as a gift to take home!
Day 3: Reconnect to Essence and Possibility
Today’s sunrise yoga and meditation will focus on reconnecting with our home, Planet Earth. The daily grind disconnects us from our essence, Mother Nature. Without our essence, who or what are we? Once we’ve re-established a connection, we will enjoy a breakfast spread of healthy, organic, and locally made, whole foods. Today we will spend the day at the villa and invite the entertainment to come to us. Mid-morning, we will hear from our founder, Sara Renshaw, about her sustainability journey and learn what you can do to help save the planet. Next, we will listen to Angela Damman, the founder of Angela Damman, luxury handbags, and home goods, a small sustainable business making gorgeous goods from locally grown plant fibers. She also started a women’s group to keep the local weaving traditions alive. Throughout the morning, there will be a small local artisan fair with handmade goodies from producers, artists, and designers throughout Yucatan, including Angela’s! Over lunch, we will hear from health and wellness expert Manola Perez, the founder of Tai Spa and Planeta Wellness. Manola also started Yucatan limpia mi playa, the most extensive beach clean-up organization in Yucatan. We invited Manola and her staff from Tai Spa to the villa for an afternoon of spa treatments. And finally, we will close out the day with a dinner catered by a local restaurant and served in the villa's glorious gardens.
Attire for the day: Today is about relaxing and comfort. It’s perfectly acceptable to wear your yoga pants all day. It can also be a good day for your pool party outfit if you feel like being fancy. For dinner, you may want to wear sleeves and pants.
Day 4: Reconnect to Nature
Early start Day. Today’s mindfulness exercise begins at sunrise for bird watching and nature discovery in the mangrove forests on Mexico's Gulf Coast. Your choice: self kayak or a captained wooden boat to push you through the marshland. The area is a favorite for the American Flamingo. It’s also the perfect time of the year for migratory birds 100+ species. After a few hours of reconnecting through nature, we will meet Amigas del Manglares, a group of women that started a mangrove reforestation program to protect their homes from rising seas. They will talk about the mangroves, their importance to the ecology of the planet, and give us a demonstration of reforestation. Not too far away is a delicious seafood restaurant on the sea; here is where we will enjoy lunch and maybe a walk by the sea before returning to Merida. The afternoon looks like a chaise lounge by the pool with a fruity drink in hand or perhaps a nap in a hammock under the ceiba tree. Once the sun goes down, the ladies will go out for a night on the town. We will start at Hacienda Teya, a traditional Yucatecan (gourmet) dinner. Then we will stroll the cobblestone streets of Colonial Centro Merida for one of a kind shopping, a frozen treat, or maybe a nightcap if you so choose.
Attire for the day: Lightweight, long sleeves, and pants for the morning with nature. Think Columbia or REI outdoor clothing. Water shoes like Keens are brilliant. Swimsuit and comfortable lounging wear for free time, and a cute dress or blouse for dinner. Sturdy, comfortable shoes for the evening.
Day 5: Reconnect with our Ancestors
Breakfast is on the go this morning. The intention of today’s yoga flow and meditation is to reconnect with our ancestors. We will flow and meditate at a sacred Maya archeological site to reconnect directly with the ancient energy. Next, we will explore the archeological site with a knowledgeable guide to learn the history of the once massively populated city. Then it will be the perfect time to jump into for a refreshing cenote to swim for a few minutes before heading to Ana’s family home for a lovely typical Yucatecan lunch. Ana is a modern Maya. She lives with her family in a small community outside Merida. Ana hosts the community beekeeping CO-OP in her garden. After lunch, she will teach us about Yucatan's bees and share with us a delicious honey tasting from her beehives! Honey is sacred to the Mayas; you will discover why. The afternoon brings us back to the villa for some free time. The last night is always bittersweet; we never want the magic of the holiday to end! That is why we go all out for our goodbye dinner and activities. We want to keep some things a surprise, but you can expect a lively evening with music, dancing, and a beautiful closing ceremony.
Attire for the day: Lightweight, long sleeves, and pants for the morning with nature, combined with comfortable fitness wear for yoga. Think Columbia or REI outdoor clothing. Water shoes like Keens are brilliant. Swimsuit and comfortable lounging wear for free time, a cute dress, or blouse for dinner and closing ceremonies—sturdy, comfortable shoes for the evening.
Day 6: Reconnect to Purpose
Our final sunrise yoga and meditation’s intention is to reconnect to living purposefully and take it home with you. During our last breakfast together we will have a check-in chat. It’s an open mic moment for anyone who has something to say. Maybe you have a question, or perhaps you’ve had some revelations that you’d like to share-the floor is yours.
The Villa and transportation around Merida will be available to you all day.
At the end of our 6 days together, you can choose to stay longer and add on if you are not yet ready to go home. *highly recommended. You can stay for 2 weeks and still have things to do and see in the area. We have an excellent local guide, Cassandra. She knows all the off the beaten path places visit and “how to” visit the -not to miss- famous sites. If you are interested, let us know.
